Hawaiian Babymoon - Maternity Photos, Oahu

by Caiti Jackson

I've had a lot of people approach me lately and say, "Babymoon...what?" Like they haven't heard the term before. Maybe we are pioneers in this new trend! All I know is I wanted one last adventure with my sweetheart before our lives are forever changed :)

So we chose Hawaii! Oahu, to be exact. I lived on the Big Island, and have visited Maui, so Oahu sounded like fun. When I first heard of a babymoon, it sounded like something luxurious, relaxed, and ridiculous all at the same time. The thing is, I don't really know HOW to relax. Most of you know I am one of the most high-strung people around. So we put our own spin on the babymoon trend. We ran around Oahu (I think we made at least three complete laps around the entire island). Between all the hiking, swimming, paddle-boarding, and walking, I definitely got my exercise! We found some amazing places that were completely off the map, which I, of course, had to take advantage of for maternity photos! We found the coolest broken down buildings in the ghost town of Waialae, next to Crawford's convalescent house. This huge old jail house from 1916  was COVERED in graffiti. Trees were growing in and out of windows, and there was a grand freaking piano sitting in the main room. PHOTOGRAPHER'S PARADISE! I have to give Jake props. He has a great eye and completely rocked all the images he took of me.

I carried my cameras everywhere, documenting Hawaiian life as I once knew it. Had to share some of my favorite moments with you all. With the babymoon officially behind us, I can say that I am completely ready for this new chapter in my life and while I will never be as flamboyantly adventurous as before, having Isaac here is going to be a roller-coaster adventure all on its own!

Words of Truth

by Caiti Jackson

As I was scrolling through my news feed on Facebook last night, I ran across a post from my photographer idol, Tracy Moore. She mentioned how bad it hurt when she overheard a girl saying horrible things about her when she thought Tracy was out of earshot. Then she went on to say how she had recently overheard a girl saying positive things about her when she didn’t realize Tracy was near and how differently that had impacted her. It made me stop in my tracks and smile. Partly because I don’t think anyone in their right mind could ever say a mean thing about Tracy, and partly because I realized that it doesn’t matter who’s saying what, words are words and can wreak potentially permanent damage to any human being.

I’ve blogged a lot in the past about girls and how we have the power to destroy or build each other up, but last night, Tracy’s experience really hit home with me.

I have always striven to treat other people the way I would like to be treated. It has never been an easy goal for me, mostly because I am extremely sensitive, but partially because I am too confrontational for my own good. If there is one thing I have learned in my life, it’s that our words have the power to make a person or break their heart. I always hated the childish song, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me!” It’s so untrue. I think I’d rather have someone throw rocks at me than hear some of the cruel and negative things people have said about me.

Some people might say, “Grow a spine!” That may be true, in part. But what good does that do anyone? The perpetual cycle of back-biting and gossiping continues unchecked. Words are as permanent fixtures as couches and chairs. In fact, the words we speak aloud stick around a lot longer than your favorite couch. I want to love unconditionally, and know that it doesn’t matter who says what about me, because I am still myself at the end of the day and I still want to love others the way God loves me. I want to be the girl that builds other's confidence. I want to love myself enough to see the beauty and worth in other humans, to see enough beauty and value in others that I speak words that reflect what is true, good, and loving. I want to be able to forgive and let go of the hurtful words that have been spoken against me because really, how do I plan on loving anyone when I’m holding bitterness inside?

Life is too short to constantly be tearing others down with your words. Let’s make a goal to use our words to build instead of destroy. <3

Intern On Board: Welcome, Jaysee Allen!

by Caiti Jackson

We have big news here at Caiti Jackson Photography! We are proud to welcome Jaysee Allen to our team as our 2013 intern!

Jaysee is graduating high school this May and plans on going to college to pursuit a career in portrait photography. A girl after my own heart!  We went out last weekend to snap a couple fun shots and ended up having a blast. She is one of the quietest girls I have ever met but when you finally crack her shell, she is absolutely sweet as honey.

It never fails when I take my girls out on location sessions that we get hoots and hollers from oncoming traffic and everyone passing by on foot. Jaysee was pretty quiet up until the point that we were shooting by the side of the road and a car full of young guys drove by at a glacial pace, hanging out the window. One of them yelled at Jaysee, “STAY SEXY!!!!!” I seriously have never heard a more contagious, happy, fun-filled laugh before. This girl has got a sense of humor. We also took a couple fun shots with my old Hasselblad. Her whole face lit up as soon as the medium format camera was in her hands. She’s definitely got the film bug!

I’m so excited to have you on board and can’t wait to see how you grow with your photography, Jaysee! It’s going to be a fun-filled summer full of adventures, learning together, and many more laughs. Welcome to the team!

Better Together: Children Photographer Caiti Jackson, Gillette WY

by Caiti Jackson

I had the privilege of meeting Eli and Ella the other night. I spent some time playing with them at the park while Mama hung out in the studio with baby Craig (images from his newborn session to come). One of my favorite parts of being a photographer is getting to chase kids around. I love capturing the huge personalities they hold in those tiny little bodies. These two were the sweetest siblings and it was obvious they just loved each other and their baby brother. Eli was a little shy at first, while Ella was all about hamming for the camera. It was fun to watch them interact as brother and sister.  Sam confided in me that Ella has a disorder that causes paralysis in her hands and feet from time to time. She would never be active or participate in P.E. with the other kids in her grade. It broke my heart to hear, but I never would have guessed from the time I spent with her and Eli. There was one point during our shoot that Ella went tumbling down the grassy hill and scuffed herself on the pavement. She was brave though, and not one tear escaped her eyes. Eli was right on her heels to pick her up as soon as she went down. Such sweet brotherly love. We shot until the thunderstorm rolled in. As soon as the first crack of lighting hit their ears, they became ecstatic. I love their dramatic gestures as the rain drops hit the pavement like pellets. I'll never forget Ella's cute voice as she ran around in circles, "It' raining! Can you hear the rain drops? Can you hear them?!"
Thank you for bringing them to me, Sam. You have the most adorable children ever.

Spring is here!

by Caiti Jackson

I couldn't be more excited that the weather is warming up and I'm seeing little sprigs of green in the pastures. Spring has sprung and the coldest part of winter is finally over! I always get excited to start shooting outside again. After braving sessions in 20 degree weather, I welcome these long nights and balmy weather with open arms. I had the best family session with Jess, a dear friend of mine, David, and Dillon. They made me laugh the entire time. I couldn't take anything seriously with these guys... Which I completely LOVED! They made shooting family pictures a blast. Thank you for rocking your photos, guys! So happy how they turned out!

FAMILY PHOTOS//BABY FEVER!

by Harvey Jackson

I got to know Teirdre when we were working together as baristas at Starbucks. We always talked about doing her son, Abel’s photos, but didn’t get around to scheduling her session until last year. Another year has passed and she came back to me asking if I would take maternity and family portraits for her growing family. Not only is she engaged to be married to EJ very soon, they are expecting a baby in May! Baby fever! And what an adorable family! I had so much fun running around town with these guys, posing very little, letting them interact and love on each other the whole time. I am so happy with these images. Their love radiates in every one. Thanks so much for sharing these tender moments with me, Teirdre! You are one amazing mother and I can’t wait to meet baby Rebich in May!!!  -- Caiti

UNDERWATER MATERNITY - BUBBLES + BELLIES

by Harvey Jackson

Underwater portriature is something that’s always fascinated me. I’ve been eager to invest in an affordable housing for my camera for quite some time, and I was finally blessed to be able to purchase one! Needless to say, I am beyond excited to share our first session! Tiedre was kind enough to model her beautiful bump for us. It was an incredibly overcast day, so we weren’t sure what results we would get, but I’m happy with the playful images we captured. Big thanks to Tiedre for modeling and to my wonderful husband and partner in photographic crime, Jake, for trouble shooting this with me! Excited for the future images we are going to make!

XOXO -
